Message de Bruce Katz, coprésident de PAJU (Palestiniens et Juifs Unis)English translation followsBonjour à tous et à toutes,Aujourd’hui le 29 juin 2006, on m’a téléphoné car Radio-Canada (réseau français) voulait interviewer des Palestiniens et des Juifs montréalais (je suis Juif) suite à l’invasion israélienne de Gaza et l’enlèvement des 64 parlementaires Palestiniens par les Israéliens. Le journaliste a interviewé Nada Sefian, une activiste Palestinienne qui a de la famille à Gaza, pour plus d’une heure; il m’a interviewé pendant une vingtaine de minutes. Lors de l’entrevue, j’ai exprimé des divers points : qu’ Israël fait fi du droit international, qu’il entame une politique qui veut affamer et assoiffer les Palestiniens ainsi que de détruire leurs infrastructures politique et économique, qu’Israël enlève régulièrement des Palestiniens dans les Territoires Occupés ainsi qu’au Liban et les incarcèrent sans accusation et sans preuve, et que cela est " légal " en Israël car la Cour Suprême d’Israël a soutenu cette politique du gouvernement israélien contre des avocats qui la contestaient. Alors, l’enlèvement des citoyens et citoyennes Palestiniens par Israël est " légal ", mais enlever un soldat israélien dans les territoires sous occupation est un crime, et il faut punir collectivement tout le peuple Palestinien. J’ai aussi expliqué que juste aujourd’hui un article dans le journal israélien Ha’Aretz constatait qu’ Israël planifiait arrêter les membres du gouvernement Palestinien de Hamas il y a deux semaines, alors avant l’enlèvement du soldat israélien, donc ce même enlèvement ne sert que de prétexte pour envahir Gaza en détruisant presque toutes les infrastructures. J’ai ajouté que cela constituait un crime de guerre selon le droit international, et finalement j’ai constaté qu’il y a beaucoup plus d’opposition à la politique israélienne au sein de la communauté juive maintenant qu’il y a deux ou trois ans. Le journaliste (que je ne blâme pas car il n’a pas le dernier mot sur ce qui est produit et diffusé) m’a dit que les entrevues seraient diffusées à 18h00 aux nouvelles de télévision Radio-Canada . Évidemment ce sentiment n’a pas été partagé par quelqu’un qui siège à un échelon supérieur chez Radio-Canada.Mon entrevue a été écartée, car pas diffusée, et l’entrevue avec Nada Sefian n’a pas duré plus de 45 secondes à la télé, temps durant lequel on nous informe que Nada a de la famille à Gaza et on n’entend de ses lèvres qu’un seul constat de toute cette longue entrevue : qu’il y a plus de 300 enfants Palestiniens dans des prisons en Israël. Cependant, on donne deux fois le temps à Steven Slimovitch de B’nai Brith qui dit grosso modo ceci : il ne faut pas blâmer les policiers (les Israéliens) mais plutôt les criminels (les Palestiniens) qui ont enlevé le soldat israélien. De plus, le titre de cette nouvelle fut le suivant : " Irréconciliables? " Un petit scenario, quoi. Le message qui sort, alors, du traitement préparé soigneusement par Radio-Canada est ceci : ce que Israël fait n’est pas si grave, il n’y a pas de terrain d’entente entre Palestiniens et Juifs, et il n’y a pas de dissidence au sein de la communauté juive car tous les Juifs appuient la position d’Israël tel que Steven Slimovitch l’explique. Voyez-vous comment on peut aider un peu la montée de l’anti-sémitisme tout en pointant le doigt à ceux qui critiquent la politique israélienne, car ne vous imaginez pas que le public n’est pas outragé face à ce que fait l’armée israélienne, et avec raison. Ne songeons pas non plus que le grand public va différencier entre " Israël " et " Juifs ". Après tout, le sionisme a été construit par l’effacement de cette différence entre État et Religion. C’est essentiellement ce que Norman Finkelstein a expliqué à maintes reprises.Pensez-vous, les amis, qu’il y a un certain agenda que certains veulent faire imposer, c’est-à-dire que l’on n’a pas le droit de faire aucun critique d’Israël, et si vous le faites on va tout simplement le censurer dès le départ? Permettez-moi de vous donner un autre exemple concret parmi tant d’autres : il y a quelques mois lors de la crise de santé d’Ariel Sharon, le réseau TVA (LCN) appelle un Palestinien que je connais bien pour une entrevue à la télé. Il le fait et parmi d’autres choses exprime le fait qu’Ariel Sharon n’a jamais été un homme de paix. On lui dit que l’entrevue sera diffusé à 19h30 dans la soirée. Elle n’est pas diffusée. Questionné sur le pourquoi, le canal des nouvelles LCN (TVA) dira que l’on n’a pas pu le diffuser car " on n’a pas pu trouver quelqu’un pour présenter le point de vue pro-israélien " afin d’y mettre un peu de " balance ". Voici un autre exemple : moi-même avec ce même ami Palestinien, nous allons sur invitation pour donner une entrevue au programme de radio Sans Frontières (Radio-Canada) sur les Accords de Genève dont nous avons fait l’analyse et la critique. On nous dit que l’entrevue sera diffusée le lendemain. Elle n’est pas diffusée. On présente à sa place une courte entrevue avec deux Juifs israéliens qui parlent d’un certain découragement suite aux échecs des pourparlers entre Israéliens et Palestiniens. Rien de trop critique. Politiquement correct.Voilà chers amis des exemples de la soi-disant " liberté de la presse " ici chez nous. Il me semble que ce même phénomène de censure s’applique avec encore davantage de rigueur chez les media de langue anglaise avec l’exception du Toronto Star lequel reste un des rares journaux au Canada anglais qui garde une certaine philosophie libéral. Le dégoût que je ressens face à tous ces mensonges et cette désinformation qui servent à blanchir les crimes d’un état hors-la-loi israélien, et lesquelles ,en les blanchissant, incitent davantage le nettoyage ethnique de la population Palestinienne, ce dégoût me remplit des orteils jusqu’aux oreilles. Salaam, shalom!Bruce KatzPalestiniens et Juifs unis (PAJU)MontréalHello to all,Today, June 28th, 2006, I was asked to grant an interview to Radio-Canada television (French network) since they wanted to interview a few Montreal Palestinians and Jews (I am Jewish) on Israel’s invasion of Gaza and its kidnapping of 64 Palestinian parliamentarians in reprisal for the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier. The journalist interviewed Nada Sefian, a local Palestinian activist with family in Gaza, for more than an hour; he interviewed me for about twenty minutes. During the interview I expressed a number of points: that Israel disregards international law with impunity, that it is carrying out a policy of privation of food and water against the Palestinians while also destroying their political and economic infrastructures, that Israel regularly kidnaps and imprisons in Israeli jails Palestinians from the Occupied Territories as well as from Lebanon, that this kidnapping is "legal" In Israel as the Supreme Court of Israel has upheld the government’s position against lawyers seeking to contest the policy of kidnapping, but that kidnapping an Israeli soldier who is part of an occupation force is a crime, and so that apparently merits the collective punishment of the Palestinian people. I also explained that just today an article appeared in the Israeli newspaper Ha’Aretz which states that Israel had been planning to arrest Palestinian government officials as long as two weeks ago, in other words before the Israeli soldier was kidnapped; ergo, that kidnapping simply serves as the pretext to do just that: to invade Gaza, seize the Palestinian parliamentarians, and destroy its infrastructures. I added that this action constitutes a war crime under international law, and finally I stated that there is much more opposition to Israeli policies within the Jewish community now than there was two or three years ago. The journalist (whom I do not blame because he does not have the last word on what is edited out and finally presented) told me that the interviews would be shown on the six o’clock TV news. But someone at a higher echelon at Radio-Canada had a different idea.As it turned out, nothing of my interview was shown ,and of the interview done with Nada Sefian, no more than 45 seconds of it were shown during which we see Nada trying to contact family in gaza, and we hear only one short sentence from her lips: there are more than 300 Palestinian children currently in Israeli prisons. On the other hand, twice as much time is accorded to Steven Slimovitch of B’nai Brith who says the following: don’t blame the police (the Israelis) but rather the criminals (the Palestinians) who kidnapped the soldier. Moreover, the title of the news piece was "Irreconcilable?" Cooked scenario, would you say? The message which came out of this contrived news piece is the following: that what Israel is doing is not really that bad, that there is no possibility of common ground between Palestinians and Jews, and that there is no dissidence within the Jewish community because all Jews support Israel’s position such as Steven Slimovitch presents it. Do you see how easy it is to help push up the tide of anti-semitism while pointing the finger at those who dare to criticize Israel? Do not imagine for a moment that the general public is not outraged at what the Israeli army is doing; do not imagine either that the public will make the distinction between "Israel" and "Jews". After all, Zionism was built by erasing the distinction between State and Religion. It is essentially what Norman Finkelstein has explained on numerous occasions.Do you think that there is a certain agenda that certain people wish to impose, that is to say that one simply does not have the right to criticize Israel, and if one does criticize, then that will simply be suppressed? Permit me to give you another example among so many others: several months ago during the initial period of Ariel Sharon’s health crisis, the French-language news channel LCN (TVA) called a Palestinian whom I know very well and asked him to give a television interview to be taped in advance. He went there and expressed the fact that Ariel Sharon had never been a man of peace nor had he ever worked toward establishing a peace between Palestinians and Israelis. My Palestinian friend is told that the interview will be shown at 7:30 PM that same evening. The interview was never broadcast. Questioned as to why, LCN answered that the interview could not be broadcast because "we could not find anyone to present the pro-Israeli point of view" in order to create a certain "balance.".Here is yet another example: this same Palestinian friend and I were invited to be interviewed for the radio program Sans Frontières (Radio-Canada) on the subject of the Geneva Accord which we analysed in a critical fashion. We were told that the interview would be broadcast the following day. It was not broadcast. In its stead was presented a short interview with two Jewish Israelis who expressed a certain sense of disappointment at the failure of talks between Palestinians and Israelis. Nothing too critical. Quite politically correct. Here are but a few examples of the so-called "freedom of the press" that reigns here. My personal experience has led me to believe that the same type of censorship is even more strictly imposed in the English-language media, perhaps with the exception of the Toronto Star which may be one of the last liberal-minded papers left in Canada. The disgust which I feel as a witness to the disinformation and the outright lies which serve to whitewash the crimes of a rogue Israeli state, and in so doing incite still further the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population, this disgust fills me from head to toe.
